When to Throw
Good Water
Active or roaming suspended fish, schooling activity, open water off points and ledges, channel edges, fish that won't commit to a finesse do-nothing presentation. Forward-facing sonar required to place this precisely.
Bad Water
Fish glued tight to bottom or buried in cover, heavily pressured fish that spook off a bigger profile, situations where a finesse hover (Damiki, Hover Rig) is already working — don't burn a good bite with a bigger bait.
Bait & Head System
Default · Bigger Profile · Open-Water Search
Z-Man Graph ShadZ — 1/4 oz / 3/0 (default)
Default to the Z-Man Graph ShadZ — a pre-rigged, line-through FFS jighead built specifically for sonar visibility, in 3/16, 1/4, or 3/8 oz depending on depth. Step up to a Keitech Swing Impact FAT 4.8" on a Z-Man Swimbait Eye Jig Head (3/8 or 1/2 oz, 5/0) when you need a bigger profile to pull a reaction strike from an aggressive or roaming fish.
Z-Man Graph ShadZ
1/4 oz / 3/0 (default)
Pre-rigged line-through jighead + shad-profile ElaZtech body. Air cavity and molded scale pattern built for sonar return.
Default FFS bait — suspended fish, open water, channel edges
Keitech Swing Impact FAT 4.8"
Bigger profile
Paddle-tail swimbait, holds action at any retrieve speed.
Roaming/aggressive fish, reaction strikes
Z-Man Swimbait Eye Jig Head
3/8 or 1/2 oz / 5/0
Streamlined nose-forward head, oversized eye strike target, dual keeper barbs.
Pair with the 4.8" Keitech for the power option
Retrieve Modes
Count-Down & Swim · Speed-Up · Slow-Roll · Follow-and-Kill
Match the retrieve to what the fish does on screen.
Match the retrieve to what the fish does on screen. This is a reaction technique — read, don't guess.
Count-Down & Swim
Count-Down & Swim
Default — cast past, count to depth, swim through the zone
Steady retrieve speed, straight through the fish's depth
Speed-Up
Speed-Up
Fish tracking but losing interest
Reel faster to trigger a reaction chase, then re-cast if it doesn't commit
Slow-Roll
Slow-Roll
Fish closing the gap, staying tight to the bait
Ease off — let the fish close the last few feet on its own
Follow-and-Kill
Follow-and-Kill
Fish right on the bait, won't eat
Stop the retrieve dead for a beat, then twitch once — often triggers the strike
Where to Throw Each
Main Lake Points
Cast past roaming fish tracking bait along the point.
Ledges & Channel Edges
Count down to the depth break and swim it along the edge.
Open Water / Schoolers
Cast past busting fish, swim through — bigger profile pulls from a distance.
Deep Flats
Search water covering roaming, non-committal fish marked on the graph.
Cheat Sheet
Default / unknown
Z-Man Graph ShadZ 1/4 oz, count down to depth, steady swim.
Roaming / aggressive fish
Keitech 4.8" on Swimbait Eye Jig Head 1/2 oz, faster swim to trigger reaction.
Fish tracking but not committing
Speed-Up retrieve — make it decide now or lose it.
Fish tight on the bait
Slow-Roll, then Follow-and-Kill — stop dead, twitch once.
Fish won't leave bottom / heavily pressured
Switch to Damiki Rig or Hover Rig — finesse do-nothing beats a big profile here.
Part of the FFS family
This is the reaction end of the spectrum. For the downsized jighead option that covers the same suspended fish with less profile, see Mid-Strolling. When fish spook off the bigger profile or won't chase, drop down to the Hover Rig or, in cold water, the Damiki Rig. For the full map of FFS techniques and which to throw when, see the FFS System Guide.
