Mid-Strolling

A jighead-minnow system for covering water horizontally on suspended fish — the power-fishing middle of the FFS spectrum.

Also called: strolling, jig-minnowing, shake-strolling, the "midst" technique

Roll, don't hop: The whole technique is the side-to-side roll. A high-axis strolling head plus a constant rod-tip shake makes the bait flash and wobble like a swimming shad.
Horizontal, always: Cast well past the fish, count the bait down to just above their depth, and swim it back over their heads. Never below them.
Shake and reel at the same time: Slow steady reel, fast light shake. The shake lives in the rod tip, not the wrist-snap of a jerkbait.
Level bait or nothing: A minnow that lists or noses down kills the roll. Rig it dead straight on the keeper.

When to Throw

Good Water

Suspended fish over deep water, roaming bait schools, herring and shad lakes, fish that track a hover rig but won't commit to something that sits still, 8–30 ft over channels, points, and timber tops, clear to lightly stained water.

Bad Water

Fish pinned tight to bottom (Damiki or bottom-pop them instead), dirty water where fish can't track a swimming minnow, heavy cover that demands baitcasting line.

Bait & Head System

Default · Deeper Fish · Big-Bait · Pressured

3/16 oz Range Roller + 5" Lab Series Minnow (default)

Default: 3/16 oz strolling head with a 5" minnow. Step to 1/4–3/8 oz for deeper fish or wind; drop to 1/8 oz shallow. Match the body to the forage and pressure — Lab Series is the workhorse, Sakamata Shad is the JDM original, the Heavy-Weight Sakamata sinks faster without upsizing the head, and the 4" Stroll Shad downsizes for pressured fish.

Common mistake — Using a plain ball head. It swims, but it doesn't roll. The high-axis head is the technique.

Retrieves

Standard · Stroll-and-Kill · Burn · Bottom

Match the retrieve to fish mood. Standard stroll is the default cover-water cadence. Stroll-and-kill triggers followers. Burn stroll is for aggressive schoolers. Bottom stroll pulls fish hugging the bottom edge of bait.

Standard Stroll

Standard

Default — cast past, count down, slow reel with a constant light shake

Bait swims and rolls at one depth all the way back

Stroll-and-Kill

Kill

Fish tracks but won't commit

Stop everything for 1–2 seconds — bait glides and flutters

Burn Stroll

Burn

Schoolers and aggressive suspended spotted bass

Faster reel, harder shake

Bottom Stroll

Bottom

Fish hugging the bottom edge of bait

Let it hit bottom, then stroll it just off the floor

Where to Throw Each

Channel Swings & Creek Mouths

Roaming winter and summer suspenders; standard stroll through the school's depth.

Timber Tops

Stroll just over the tips; stroll-and-kill when one rises.

Main-Lake Points with Bait

Burn stroll near the surface, standard stroll deeper.

Herring Lakes

6"-plus bodies on the XL head over long tapering points.

Bridge Pilings & Marina Mouths

Count down to the fish's exact depth and hold that line on the retrieve.

Cheat Sheet

Default / unknown

3/16 oz Range Roller + Lab Series Minnow 5.25" — standard stroll.

Fish track but won't eat

Stroll-and-kill; drop to the 4" Stroll Shad.

Deeper than 20 ft or windy

1/4–3/8 oz head, or the Sakamata Heavy Weight.

Big-bait fish

Round Head XL + 6.5" Lab Series or 6" Sakamata.

Bottom-hugging fish

Bottom stroll, or switch to the Damiki rig.

Bait won't roll

Check the head (high-axis only) and re-rig the minnow dead straight.

Part of the FFS family

Mid-strolling is the horizontal, water-covering middle of the forward-facing sonar spectrum. When fish want less movement, downsize to the Hover Rig. When they're holding vertical under the boat, switch to the Damiki Rig. When they want a bigger profile, size up to Vertical Swimbaiting.
