When to Throw

How It Differs From a Standard Drop Shot

Suspended-fish adaptation of the bottom drop shot

Same knot, same rig geometry, different job

A conventional drop shot anchors on bottom and shakes in place. The scope shot is a suspended-fish technique — the weight jumps to 3/8–1/2 oz for fast sink and long-cast connection, the retrieve is horizontal (pendulum the rig through the water column, popping and killing like a soft jerkbait), and targeting is individual — you cast past a specific fish on the screen, not structure. Lead the fish, intersect its depth, and keep the bait above its eye level — bass feed up.

The Rig

Compact minnow nose-hooked above a heavy drop-shot weight

Light-wire drop shot / finesse nose hook, size 1 up to 1/0 for 3.5–4 in minnows — nose hook so the bait sits horizontal and darts freely. 3/8 oz tungsten drop-shot weight is the baseline; 1/2 oz for deeper than 25 ft, wind, or moving fish that need the bait in their face fast. Teardrop or ball both work — the weight is a delivery vehicle here, not a bottom-feel tool. Leader between hook and weight is 10–15 in — shorter than a bottom drop shot; the gap exists to separate the bait from the sinker on the fish's view, not to clear grass. Palomar with a long tag end, tag back through the hook eye so the hook stands 90°.

The Retrieve

Cast · Sink · Pop · Hang · Set

Pendulum the rig through the water column with jerkbait cadence

1) Find the fish and lead it — cast well past. 2) Count it down (~1 ft/sec on a 3/8 oz weight) and kill the sink 2–5 ft above the fish. 3) Pop and hang — two or three sharp snaps, then a dead pause. The sinker pendulums forward, the minnow darts, then hangs motionless. That pause is the bite window. 4) Watch the fish on sonar, not the bait — rising fish means freeze; fading fish means speed up. 5) Reel-set — load the rod by reeling, then sweep. Never snap-set on the light-wire nose hook.
