When to Throw
Good Water
Pressured fish, clear-to-stained water, suspended bass on FFS, deep brush, rocky banks, bluff walls, and any time fish refuse moving baits.
Bad Water
Muddy water with no visibility, fish buried in matted cover, or high-percentage power-fishing windows where you should be moving fast.

Match weight shape to bottom
Cylinder weights slice through grass, milfoil, hydrilla, brush, and docks with minimal hang-ups. Teardrop weights give max bottom feel on rock, sand, and clean bottom. Always use the lightest weight that still maintains contact — go heavier if you can't feel bottom, lighter (or switch to a cylinder) if you snag constantly.

The standard finesse drop shot
The base rig for open water, rock, and clean bottom — especially smallmouth and spots. Nose-hook a Roboworm or Fat Shad Shape Worm, Palomar to the hook with the tag fed back down through the eye so the hook stands straight out. Use the lightest weight that still holds bottom — teardrop on rock/sand, cylinder if you start collecting grass.

Sweet Beaver 4.20 on a baitcaster
The Power Shot is a beefed-up drop shot fished on baitcasting gear — not spinning. Per Tackle Warehouse's Power Shot guide, run a 7'2"–7'4" MH casting rod with a 7.5:1 reel and 15–20 lb fluorocarbon straight through (no braid-to-leader). Pitch the rig into heavy grass, thick brush, and dirty bottoms and drag it slowly so the bait hovers above grass, slime, and debris. The bigger profile and wide-gap hook let you set on stout line and haul pressured largemouth out of cover.

Drop shot + Ned rig in one cast
A standard drop shot rig — except the bottom weight is replaced with a Ned Rig jighead and soft plastic. The main drop shot bait hovers naturally above bottom while the Ned crawls and stands up underneath it, giving bass two totally different presentations on one cast. Combines finesse, bottom contact, and reaction triggers into one ridiculous-looking setup that bass often smoke. Keep the setup balanced — too heavy of a Ned head ruins the finesse action of the upper bait.
