Structure & water

Duke Energy reservoir on the Catawba River above Lookout Shoals — 4,100 acres, riverine character, clear-to-stained water with steep clay banks, rock bluffs, abundant docks, and standing timber in upper creek arms. Current from upstream Rhodhiss generation drives the bite. Mixed largemouth and spotted-bass fishery; underrated white bass run in spring.

NC fishing license required. Largemouth/spotted bass: 14" minimum, 5/day aggregate. No HP restriction; heavy ski traffic on weekends.

Local tip

Hickory is a dock and current lake. When Rhodhiss is generating, set up on the upper end and fish current seams behind rock and laydowns — the bite turns on within an hour. When generation is off, run to mid-lake and skip docks. The white-bass run in March–April below Rhodhiss is one of the most underrated spring bites in the region — small bucktails and inline spinners on the seam will fill a livewell.
