Structure & water

15,180-acre Yadkin River reservoir (built 1926–27) — 19 miles long with 360 miles of shoreline and three Bassmaster Classic hostings. Wide, relatively shallow main lake favors largemouth, with major creek arms (Abbotts, Flat Swamp, Buddle, Swearing, Panther, Dutch Second, Crane). Main lake runs stained-to-turbid (reaction-bait water) while creek arms stay clearer. Milfoil, coontail, and hydrilla mats grow in coves; offshore humps, brush piles, and roadbeds throughout. No motor restrictions, open 24 hours, multiple free public ramps.

Hot spots

• Abbotts Creek arm (Davidson)

  Premier largemouth arm with clearer water and vegetation. Rico popper along grass edges at dawn; fish deep bends below the Hwy 47 bridge in summer.

• Offshore humps, brush piles & main-lake points

  Primary July–Sep zone. Topwater at first light, then Rapala DT-10/14/20 in shad colors banked hard into bottom on 12 lb copolymer with a 5.1:1 reel.

• Flat Swamp & Buddle Creek arms

  Heavy aquatic vegetation by May. 1–1.5 oz tungsten punch with a Rage Craw through mats; Spro Bronzeye frog walked over the canopy.

• Rock/structure near Southmont & dam

  Stripers stack near the dam in summer for cool, oxygenated water — live shad on a 1 oz egg sinker. Adjacent rocky points hold largemouth on T-rigged creature baits.

Regulations

NC license required. Largemouth: 14" minimum, 5/day (only 2 under 14"). No motor size restrictions; PWC legal; open 24 hours. Multiple free public ramps; check NCWRC and Cube Hydro Carolinas for any seasonal drawdowns.
