When to Throw
Good Water
Late spring through fall with water in the high-50s and up. Dawn, dusk, overcast, warm nights, schooling fish, herring lakes with pelagic bait. Fall exception: on herring lakes like Belews, walkers keep producing into the mid-to-high 50s well after the calendar says the topwater bite should be over.
Bad Water
Cold water below ~55°F. Bluebird midday on slick calm water — fish will follow but not commit. When bass are pinned deep on structure.

Premium hybrid
4 7/8" ~15/16 oz. Half walker, half pencil popper. Unique bill spits water while the body walks, tungsten tail weights double as a knock plus into-the-wind distance. Feathered rear treble. SB-105 and SB-150 cover smaller and striper sizes.

4.5" 5/8 oz. The hybrid slot — half walker, half spitter. Cupped mouth throws water on every turn, reads as feeding rather than fleeing. Change-up bait when schoolers refuse a clean walking action.

Budget original
lowest · 4.5" 3/4 oz. The bait that invented walk-the-dog — since 1939. Budget entry point, still one of the easiest to walk. Hook harnesses keep trebles from fouling mid-walk.

10 · Strike King KVD Mega Dawg
Magnum walker
6" ~2 oz. Big-fish slot for when bass and stripers are keyed on 5–6" blueback herring. Boisterous rattle chamber calls fish up from surprising depths. Reviews split on the walk — some anglers say it tracks fine for the size, others report it favors one direction or glides unevenly, so plan on a break-in session before you trust it in a tournament.
