Now confirmed as an official ICAST 2026 launch — not a display piece. The Ultimate is KastKing's first all-magnesium BFS reel: magnesium frame, magnesium gear-side plate, and magnesium palm-side plate, protected by the company's Mg-Shielded coating and landing at 4.6 oz. KastKing claims the full-metal construction is 55% more rigid than carbon builds, which is a direct shot at the carbon-framed standard Kestrel two tiers down.

The headline engineering story is the Feather Spool III: a 0.2 mm wall thickness, 28 mm outer diameter, and a total weight of 3.8 g including its titanium main shaft — which KastKing bills as the thinnest and lightest spool in the world. Rated casting floor is roughly 1/64 oz (0.5 g), a full step below the standard Kestrel's 1/32 oz floor.

The genuinely novel design decision: there is no spool tension knob. Spool-to-frame clearance is factory-set under 0.2 mm, so the FAF magnetic brake dial is the only adjustment on the reel. That's a bold simplification for a $300 flagship — great for consistency out of the box, but it removes the fine-tuning lever experienced BFS anglers habitually reach for. Rounding out the package: an upgraded rotating Axis Eye line guide (8% friction reduction claimed over the prior generation) and a 9+2+1 bearing system with dedicated Ultra Slide spool-end bearings.

One caution flag carries over from day-one hands-on coverage: early reviews of the Ultimate flagged drag start-up as the soft spot, reporting that it felt lighter under load than its rating suggests. Worth watching as more units hit the water.

VERDICT: WAIT — Priority raised to P2. The launch confirmation, the tension-knob elimination, and the spool engineering make this the most interesting BFS release of the show, and it slots directly into the site's BFS system coverage. But the verdict stays Wait: the drag question needs real-world answers, Tackle Warehouse availability is listed on the ICAST landing page but not yet verified against a live product page, and $299.99 puts it in the same conversation as proven JDM options. The quiet half of the launch. The Ultimate SFS is KastKing's first spinning reel with a magnesium rotor, built on the same all-magnesium body with Mg-Shielded protection as its baitcasting sibling. The rotor is the story here: a new structure designed around the lighter material to cut start-up and stopping inertia, which translates to quicker response when working finesse presentations — the exact attribute high-end JDM finesse spinning reels sell on.

Internals are a real departure from the $119.98 Kestrel 1000 SFS: a titanium main shaft (versus aluminum), UltraDura 90 small gears, and an aerospace-grade T6 aluminum main gear. Drag jumps to 13.2 lb max — deliberately overbuilt for a 1500-size finesse reel, which KastKing justifies as stopping power for pulling fish off cover on light line. A patented shallow-spool lip design and a seamless one-piece bail complete the package at 4.8 oz.

Positioning is the open question. At $299.99 in a single 1500 size, this reel walks straight into Shimano Vanford and Daiwa territory where brand trust is entrenched. The first customer review on KastKing's own page makes exactly that comparison — favorably — but one review is one review.
