Structure & water

50,000-acre USACE Roanoke River impoundment straddling the NC/VA line — one of the South's premier mixed-species fisheries and the largest lake within driving range of Greensboro. Vast main lake with countless creek arms, standing timber, submerged roadbeds, rock points, and offshore humps. Blueback herring forage drives a famous offshore largemouth bite in summer; world-class striped bass fishery with 30+ lb fish annual. Bassmaster Elite Series stop. Open 24 hours; no motor restrictions.

  • Eastland Creek & Grassy Creek (NC)

Spawning factories with stained pockets and shallow timber. Squarebill and lipless in pre-spawn, wacky Senko during the spawn.

  • Main-lake offshore humps & brush piles

Summer herring bite — schooling activity on calm mornings. Topwater walking bait, flutter spoon, and big swimbaits over 15–25 ft humps.

  • Buoy line / dam (Bluestone area, VA)

Striped-bass headquarters. Live-bait drift with bunker or gizzard shad in summer; jigging spoons in winter.

Local tip

Kerr is enormous — don't try to fish the whole lake in a day. Pick a section (Nutbush, Eastland, or the Bluestone end) based on season and stick to it. Summer mornings the herring bite on offshore humps can be once-in-a-career; when you mark balled-up shad on a hump between Satterwhite and Henderson Point, sit on top and wait — the schooling activity rotates through and one good push can fill a livewell in 20 minutes. Use the reciprocal NC/VA license to fish across the state line freely. For multi-day trips, Satterwhite Point or Occoneechee SP cabins beat hotels — you're back on the water at first light.
