Field Guide
Wacky Rig

When to Throw
Good Water
Pressured fish, clear-to-stained water, post-front, docks, laydowns, overhanging trees, bluegill spawn, bed fish, suspended/inactive fish, calm conditions where a subtle horizontal fall triggers reactive bites.
Bad Water
Heavy wind/chop that kills line watching, deep water >10 ft (throw a Neko Rig), active topwater bite, fish aggressively chasing, or matted grass (flipping water).
Free-Fall
Docks · Laydowns · Overhangs · Spawn
Gary Yamamoto 5" Senko + VMC Weedless Neko Hook (size 1) + VMC Crossover Ring (6mm)
Slide a 6mm Crossover Ring around the egg sack and hook through the ring (use Crossover/G7 pliers to open the ring without tearing the bait). Cast, let it fall on slack line, and watch the lime braid for ticks or darts. Free-fall is where most bites happen — less is more.

Yamamoto Senko 5"
Green Pumpkin
Wacky default — salt-impregnated, slow horizontal flutter
All-around producer

Yamamoto Fuzzy Senko 5"
Green Pumpkin
Pressured fish — rubber leg skirt adds subtle action
Rubber-leg version

YUM Gadget Worm 6"
Morning Dawn
Ultra-finesse pencil profile — pressured/clear water, smallmouth, when a fat Senko gets ignored
Ribbed body with thin quill tail for slow horizontal flutter
Skip Cast
Docks · Overhangs · Boat Houses · Bushes
Sidearm, soft rod load, let the bait pancake the water and skip on flat trajectory. A 5" Senko skips farther than almost anything else — get it as deep into the shade as possible, then dead-stick on the slack fall.
Shake & Pause
Suspended fish · Followers · Beds
After the initial fall, quiver the rod tip on slack line to twitch both ends of the worm without moving it forward. Pause 5–10 seconds between shakes. Great for triggering a follower into eating it.
Where to Throw Each
Boat Docks / Posts
Skip underneath into the shade line — deadstick on the fall.
Overhanging Trees / Shade
Wacky's home water — skip as far up under the canopy as possible.
Wood Laydowns
Skip tight to the log, let it fall alongside the trunk on slack.
Spawning Beds
Cast past the bed, drag onto it, and let it sit — repeat until the fish commits.
Grass Lines / Lily Pad Edges
Work the outside edge — flutter alongside the wall of vegetation, not through it.
Suspended / Inactive Fish
Calm water, cold front — let the bait fall into their face on slack.
Cheat Sheet
Default / unknown
5" Senko Green Pumpkin + Crossover Ring — free-fall on slack line.
Skipping docks / overhangs
5" Senko, sidearm cast, soft rod load — get it deep in the shade.
Spawn / bed fish
Cast past, drag onto the bed, deadstick until they commit.
Pressured / cold front
Fuzzy Senko, longer pauses, dead-stick in their face.
Bait gets torn fast
Always ring it — never hook directly through the plastic.
Fish on bottom or deep
Switch to the Neko Rig — a nail weight in the nose puts the same worm on the deck standing up.
