Line

10–15 lb Sufix 832 Braid Neon Lime → ~10 ft Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon leader (8 lb smallmouth/clear, 10–12 lb heavy cover/big fish), FG knot to braid, Palomar to hook

60-Second Refresher

Wacky = horizontal flutter: Hook through the egg sack with an O-ring. Most bites on the initial free-fall — watch your line.
Neko = vertical stand-up: Nail weight in the nose, hook mid-body. Bait stands tail-up and quivers with the lightest shake.
Z-Man for Neko: ElaZtech floats, so the tail stands straight up off bottom. Pair with a Neko Shroom keeper + a drop of superglue and the bait lasts 10+ fish.
Skip into shade: Sidearm cast with a soft load — wacky skips farther under docks and overhangs than almost any other rig.

When to Throw

Good Water

Pressured fish, clear-to-stained water, post-front, docks, bluegill spawn, suspended/inactive fish, calm conditions where a subtle fall triggers reactive bites.

Bad Water

Heavy matted vegetation, strong wind that kills line watching, when fish are aggressively chasing bait and want a faster reaction lure.

Wacky Rig

Free-Fall · Skip · Shake & Pause

Gary Yamamoto 5" Senko + VMC Weedless Neko Hook + Crossover Ring

Slide a 6mm O-ring around the egg sack and hook through the ring. Cast, let it fall on slack line, and watch for ticks or line jumps. Skip under docks and overhanging trees, then shake-and-pause to draw a follow into a bite.

Common mistake — Tying direct through the body — the worm tears off in 1–2 fish. Always use the O-ring (or a weedless Neko hook through the ring).

Neko Rig

Stand-Up · Drag · Vertical Drop

Z-Man WormZ + VMC Nail Weight (or Neko Shroom) + Weedless Neko Hook

Insert a 1/8 oz nail weight (cut to size) into the nose of the worm, then hook mid-body. The bait stands tail-up on bottom and quivers with the lightest shake. Drop alongside dock posts, drag slowly over rock, or shake in place around grass and brush.

Common mistake — Using regular soft plastic for Neko — it lays flat on bottom instead of standing. ElaZtech is the whole point of the rig.

Where to Throw Each

Boat Docks / Posts

Wacky: skip underneath. Neko: drop vertical alongside posts.

Grass Lines / Lily Pad Edges

Both rigs. Neko stands up between blades — shake through tangles.

Wood Laydowns

Wacky: skip tight to the log. Neko: drag slowly along the trunk.

Overhanging Trees / Shade

Wacky primary — skip as far up under the canopy as possible.

Rocks / Hard Bottom

Neko only. Drag slowly so the Z-Man stands between rocks.

Suspended / Inactive Fish

Calm water, cold front — let the bait sit in their face.

Cheat Sheet

Default / unknown

Wacky 5" Senko Green Pumpkin + O-ring — free-fall on slack line.

Pressured / cold front

Neko Z-Man Finesse WormZ 4" Junebug, 1/8 oz nail — deadstick.

Skipping docks

Wacky Senko, sidearm cast, soft rod load — get it deep in the shade.

Smallmouth on rock

Neko SMH WormZ 6.5" Green Pumpkin — slow drag, let it stand.

Big fish / active

Neko Finesse WormZ 7" Green Pumpkin — drop alongside cover.

Bait gets torn fast

Switch to Z-Man + Neko Shroom + drop of superglue — 10+ fish per bait.
