60-Second Refresher

Light weight only: Enough to hold bottom and no more. Extra weight kills the natural drift that makes the rig work.

12–24" leader: Distance from shot to hook. Shorter for cover and current, longer for pressured or suspended fish.

Weedless vs. nose-hook: Texas-rig for docks, brush, and weed edges. Nose-hook in open water for maximum action.

Slow it down: Drag, pause, twitch. Bites are usually a soft tick or a slack-line load — set on weight, not on sound.

Check the line: Split shot can nick line where it's pinched. Retie or re-crimp somewhere fresh every few fish.

When to Throw

Good Water

Cold fronts, pressured fish, clear water, post-frontal shallow bass, smallmouth and spotted bass on rock, and any day a drop-shot feels like too much rig. Excellent search tool on unfamiliar water at 2–15 ft.

Bad Water

Heavy cover that snags every cast (go Texas or punch), fast reaction bites (throw a squarebill or chatterbait), or deep offshore fish where a drop-shot or football jig covers the depth better.

Cheat Sheet

Default clear-water finesse

1 shot at 18"4" green pumpkin finesse worm · nose-hooked on a #1 mosquito hook.

Around docks or laydowns

Texas-rig a small stick worm or craw on a 1/0–2/0 EWG so it comes through cover clean.

Cold front, tough bite

Downsize to a 3" grub or tube, drop to 6 lb fluoro, and slow the drag to a crawl.

Smallmouth on rock

Tube or small craw, 12" leader, drag and pop off the bottom.

Bite is a soft tick

Reel down, feel weight, then sweep-set — don't jerk into slack line.

Fishing it too fast

You're not fishing a split shot rig. Stop. Let it sit. Then move it 6 inches.
