60-Second Refresher

Fish it like a jig: Not a soak-it-in-place drop shot. Pitch, fall, shake-drag a few feet, move on.
Short leader is the system: 6–12" — default 8–10". The short tag is what makes it pitchable and weedless.
Cylinder weight matters: Pinch-style tungsten cylinder slides through algae, muck, and sparse grass cleaner than a teardrop.
Most bites on the fall: Watch for ticks, line jumps, or the line swimming sideways.

When to Throw

Good Water

Clear to lightly stained water, 4–12 ft around visible or semi-visible targets, algae/muck/sparse grass, high-pressure banks where a Ned or shaky head is overused.

Bad Water

Heavy matted vegetation, dirty water where fish can't track the fall, fast current or heavy wind that prevents bottom contact.

Rig Components

Owner 2/0 offset + 1/8 oz cylinder + 8–10" leader + 4" Zoom Dead Ringer

Tie the Owner Down Shot Offset 2/0 with a Palomar, run the tag back through the eye so the hook stands correctly, pinch the cylinder weight 8–10" below, and Tex-pose a 4" Dead Ringer skin-hooked through the body.

Default Pitch Shot bait

Common mistake — Using a round/teardrop weight or a long drop-shot leader — kills the pitchability and fouls in algae.

How to Fish It

Pitch · Fall · Shake & Drag · Move

Underhand pitch to color changes, rock edges, holes in algae, grass openings, and the green line. Semi-slack on the fall. Light shake while dragging only 1–3 feet. If nothing happens fast, reel in and pitch again.

Default

8–10" leader · 1/8 oz cylinder · Watermelon Seed

Standard setup

Start here every time

No Wind

Drop to 1/16 oz if you can still feel bottom

Calm water, light bite

Lighter fall, more time in the zone

Muck / Algae

Use 10–12" leader to keep the worm higher

Heavy bottom slime

Lift the worm above the gunk

Clean Bottom

Shorten to 6–8" for tighter target contact

Hard bottom, rock, sand

Closer to bottom = tighter strike zone

Clouds / Stain

Switch to Junebug or Red Bug

Low light or color in the water

More visual presence

Where to Throw Each

Color Change

Dark spots on light banks or light spots on dark banks.

Green Line

The depth where you can no longer see bottom clearly.

Transitions

Clay to rock, gravel seams, hard spots, small depressions.

Algae Holes

Open spots in muck, snot grass, new grass, or sparse vegetation.

Cheat Sheet

Default

1/8 oz cylinder, 8–10" leader, Watermelon Seed Dead Ringer.

Belews clear water

Watermelon Seed first; Salt & Pepper in ultra-clear sun.

Clouds / stain

Junebug or Red Bug.

Heavy algae/muck

Lengthen leader to 10–12" to keep worm above slime.

Drop to 1/16 oz if you can still feel bottom.

Line starts moving sideways

Reel until the rod loads, then sweep — don't cross their eyes.
