60-Second Refresher

Don't overpower the retrieve: Most molded swimbaits work best with a steady retrieve and occasional pauses.
Hook gap matters: Thick body + too-small hook = missed fish and skin-hooked bites. Use a wide-gap hook.
Trim & glue nose for jig heads: Trim the nose flat, add a tiny drop of gel super glue, then seat the bait flush — a crooked bait rolls.
Stinger only when needed: Improves short-strike hookup ratio but makes the rig less weedless.

When to Throw

Good Water

Pre-spawn, post-spawn, fall baitfish movement, winter fish grouped on structure, wind/clouds/clear-to-light stain, active bait, fish on points or edges, deep structure where a 1/2–3/4 oz jig head can maintain bottom contact.

Bad Water

Ultra-shallow muddy water where fish can't track the bait, heavy brush with exposed jig-head rigging, cold-front fish that only nip the tail (add a stinger).

Bait Selection

Pre-Rigged · Weedless · Deep · Hollow Trophy

CullShad · Magdraft · Magdraft Freestyle · Huddleston Deluxe

CullShad as a strong-tail search bait around baitfish. Standard Magdraft for shallow points/grass edges/open water. Magdraft Freestyle when you need to rig your own (weedless or jig head). Huddleston Deluxe for clear water, pressured fish, and offshore structure — the subtle trophy bait.

Green Gizzard Shad · 6" · 1.8 oz

Clear water, pressured fish, points, bluff walls, offshore

Subtle realistic swimmer — trophy bait

Common mistake — Crooked Freestyle on a jig head — it rolls and loses the natural swimming action. Trim, glue, verify straight tracking.

Hook / Jig Head System

Shallow weedless · Power weedless · Deep jig head · Stinger

Gamakatsu Spring Lock 6/0 for shallow weedless work (3/16–1/4 oz). Mustad Infiltrator 8/0 for power-weedless grass/wind and deeper countdown (3/8–1/2 oz). Z-Man DieZel Eye 6/0 for deep ledges/structure (1/2–3/4 oz). Add an Owner ST-36 size 2 stinger near the tail with a short braid tether when fish are short-striking.

Retrieves

Slow Roll · Wake · Stop-and-Go · Bottom Crawl · Countdown

Slow roll just above bottom/grass/cover. Wake over grass and shallow points when fish look up. Stop-and-go around cover, points, and bait balls — many bites when it stalls or restarts. Bottom crawl on the DieZel Eye on ledges and rock. Countdown over deeper fish, then retrieve through their depth.

Slow Roll

Steady

Default — keep bait just above bottom, grass, or cover

Let the tail work without overworking

Wake Retrieve

High & Slow

Run high over grass, shallow points, or cover when fish look up

Push a wake on the surface

Stop and Go

Trigger

Around cover, points, bait balls

Bites when it stalls or restarts

Bottom Crawl

Deep Contact

DieZel Eye on ledges, drop-offs, rock

Stay in the strike zone with bottom contact

Countdown Retrieve

Depth

Count down over deeper fish, then retrieve through their depth

Don't always fish the bank

Where to Throw Each

Shallow

Grass edges, docks, laydowns, brush — Freestyle on weighted hooks where an exposed jig hook would hang.

Open

Bait balls, flats, points, wind-blown banks — CullShad/Magdraft/Huddleston when fish track larger forage.

Deep

Ledges, drop-offs, river channels, brush piles — Freestyle on 1/2–3/4 oz DieZel Eye for 15–25 ft bottom contact.
