60-Second Refresher

Start with 1/2 oz: The workhorse for casting distance, grass contact, and depth control.
Don't baby grass: Let it touch, then rip it free hard enough to trigger a reaction. The pause after the rip is the trigger.
Carry rattle & one-knocker: Some days fish clearly prefer one pitch over the other. After catching one on loud, follow with quieter.
Lean & reel, not crack: Trebles — lean and reel into them instead of a heavy jig-style hookset.

When to Throw

Good Water

Prespawn grass flats (red/craw), fall shad movement (chrome/shad/gold), wind-blown flats and points with bait, sparse grass that lets the bait tick and rip free, cold water with the yo-yo retrieve.

Bad Water

Matted grass that buries the hooks, heavy wood/brush/dock cables, straight mud with no visibility and no baitfish signs.
