Gear

Rod

Dobyns Champion XP 734C — 7'3" Heavy / Fast

Reel

Shimano Curado 200 DC · 7.4:1 LH (CUDC201HG)

Line

20 lb Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon · alt 40–65 lb braid → 20 lb fluoro leader past 45 ft or in heavy current

60-Second Refresher

Drop on tension: Thumb the spool so it drops fast and straight — gets to 25–50 ft quickly.
Lift 1–3 ft: Short pops or controlled lifts. Cold water = smaller hops, aggressive fish = harder pulls.
Follow on semi-slack: Just enough slack for the spoon to flutter. Too tight pencils down; too slack hides bites.
Three bite types: Hard thump, sudden weight on the next lift, or unexpected slack from a fish swimming up with the bait.

When to Throw

Good Water

Water below 50°F in late fall/winter/early prespawn, deep clear water with threadfin/small bait, fish grouped on sonar or tight to bottom, summer suspended fish over timber/brush/ledges.

Bad Water

Shallow scattered fish with no bait, thick grass or brush where trebles foul constantly, ultra-shallow dirty water where fish can't track the fall.

Spoon Selection

Cotton Cordell + War Eagle + Hopkins + 6th Sense + Jigging Rap

Cotton Cordell for the classic flutter on winter fish and timber. War Eagle ready-rigged for smaller-shad bites. Hopkins Shorty for fast-fall and getting deep quickly. 6th Sense Divine for modern realistic profiles around FFS targets. Jigging Rap when you want a darting glide instead of a flutter.

Ice-jig style action

Common mistake — Dropping on a completely slack line — you'll miss the fall bites unless you're intentionally free-spooling through visible fish on electronics.

Color & Size

Match clarity, light, depth

Chrome/Nickel = clear, sun, shad. Gold = stain, clouds, perch-tone forage. White/Glow = clouds, deep water, low light, winter. Use 1/2 oz on small bait and pressured fish; step to 3/4–1 oz for 20–45 ft and faster drops.

Chrome / Nickel

Default flash

Clear water, sun, shad

Best when fish feed on threadfin/herring/bright bait

Gold

Warm flash

Stain, clouds, perch tone

When silver gets followers

White / Glow

Visibility

Clouds, deep water, low light

Strong winter choice — brighter target

1/2 oz

Finesse Size

Small shad and pressured fish

Best for small bait or finicky fish

3/4–1 oz

Workhorse

Standard deep range — 20–45 ft, timber tops, faster drops

Best all-around deep size

Terminal Tackle

Swivels · Split Rings · Trebles

Add a SPRO Power Swivel #4 above the spoon to reduce line twist. Use an Owner Hyper Wire #3 split ring between spoon and swivel if hardware is weak. Upgrade trebles to Owner ST-36 size 2/4 for bass; ST-56 3X for giants, stripers, or heavy cover.

Where to Throw Each

Deep Bait Schools

Drop through or 5–10 ft below — don't always go to bottom if fish are suspended.

Hard Structure

Long points, humps, ledges, channel swings, river bends, bluff ends.

Standing Timber & Brush

Fish directly over deep tree tops and brush. If it hangs, get above it, add slack, and shake the rod tip lightly.

Creeks & Steep Breaks

Major creek arms around channel-swing points and steep contour breaks loaded with bait.

Cheat Sheet

Default winter / deep fish

1/2 or 3/4 oz Chrome Cotton Cordell · drop on tension · 1–3 ft lifts.

Summer offshore timber

3/4 oz Hopkins Shorty Gold over tree tops.

Sonar / FFS targets

1 oz 6th Sense Divine 4K Shad.

Followers but no commits

Switch chrome → gold/white/glow or add a feathered treble.

Deep past 45 ft / heavy current

40–65 lb braid + 20 lb fluoro leader.

Hung in timber

Get directly above, add slack, lightly shake — usually pops free.
