Structure & water

12,410-acre USACE Neuse River impoundment north of Raleigh — long, narrow, and stain-influenced with extensive standing timber in the upper end (Beaverdam, Ledge Creek, New Light arms) and cleaner water near the dam. Roadbeds, brush piles, and creek channels throughout. Largemouth bite is consistent rather than giant — solid 2–5 lb fish in numbers with an occasional 6+. Strong winter shad-following pattern with Alabama rigs.

Forage: Threadfin shad, gizzard shad, alewife, bluegill, crayfish

Hot spots

• Upper-end standing timber (Beaverdam / Ledge / New Light)

  Square-bill crank ricocheting off stumps in pre-spawn; T-rig a creature in summer for fish holding deep in the wood.

• Highway 50 bridge and mid-lake roadbeds

  Hard-bottom roadbed crossings in 10–18 ft hold summer fish — Carolina rig with a finesse craw or drop-shot a minnow on the brush.

• Holly Point / Rolling View flats

  Spring spawning flats in 2–6 ft with scattered cover. Lipless in pre-spawn, wacky Senko during the spawn.

• Lower lake near the dam

  Cleaner deeper water — winter Alabama rig and jerkbait pattern on suspended bait. Striper bycatch is common.

  Largest ramp on the lake and the primary tournament launch. Central main-lake access — best for the mid-lake roadbeds and Highway 50 bridge.

Regulations

NC license required. Largemouth: 14" minimum, 5/day (only 2 under 14"). Multiple free USACE & state-park ramps. Check NCWRC for tournament closures.
